Yo!Bot artist talk at Build Brighton: 11th March 2014

Hannah and David attended an artist talk this evening at Build Brighton by the maker of YoBot;

Yo!Bot is a little battery powered robot that uses your SmartPhone or device as it's brain. Simply slot in your iPhone, iPod Touch or Android* device.

We learnt lots about manufacturing, 3D modelling and 3D printing, Oki printers (high quality), which software to use, and what equipment is easy to use to create prototypes. Below are some slides to show this;

Purchased Rapman 3.1 3D Printer - controller requires replacement

Subversive Crafts Exhibition: Brighton Museum: Saturday 8th March

Hannah and David visited the Subversive Design exhibition at Brighton Museum to check out a chair made out of soft toys made by the Campana Brothers;

The chair was essentially a large Toy Hack constructed out of multiples of several different toys. The chair was eye catching and inspirational, as was the rest of the exhibition. The display cases were also very interesting, raw and potentially available to borrow for future exhibitions, as I asked one of the museum exhibition installers if it might be possible for us to borrow display cases for a future Exploring Senses exhibition, and the answer was a potential yes!

3Dify: 3D printing artist talk at Brighton FuseBox: Tuesday 4th March 2014

David Allistone attended the 3Dify talk at Brighton's Fusebox today to learn about the emerging 3D printing industry. I learnt about the variety of ways 3D printing can be used within our world including plastic, metal, and ceramic materials, small scale and large scale examples being 3D printed concrete houses. I also learnt about 3D modalling software that is free to use.

David visits National Trust 'Batemans': ceramic wall reliefs: could be interesting for Bespoke CommuniToy

Batemans is a classic arts and crafts period house full of interesting artefacts. Whilst exploring the house David discovered some amazing ceramic wall reliefs that had been fired in terracotta clay. It would be amazing to see futuristic Toy Hack creations presented in this kind of 3D format, possibly out of clay, wood or an alternative material such as 3D printed plastics.

Also on display was this wooden animal safari scene. It would be interesting to make hybrid Toy hack animal displays!

David Arnold Photographic Training: PARK STUDIO LIGHTING - PART 2 SHOOTING PEOPLE PORTRAITS WITH JOHN CLEMENTS

Exploring Senses photographer David Arnold has just booked some training at Park Cameras to learn about off camera flash, which will be used in the field to take photographs of participants and artefacts made during Exploring Senses workshops.

On this intermediate level workshop we explain and show a wide range lighting techniques, plus the accompanying technical skills, that enable repeatable and enjoyable results to be achieved when photographing people.

It is ideal both for those starting out with studio lighting, or those simply wanting a recap, refresh and some new ideas.

Some key areas covered include:

• Understanding studio flash
• Camera settings for studio lighting
• How to meter for studio lighting
• A practical guide to using reflectors, umbrellas, soft-boxes and other common accessories for people photography
• Practical lighting arrangements for repeatability
• Working in and around a home environment.Capturing the head shot to full length images.
• Solutions to common people lighting needs, such as photographing people wearing glasses, dealing with various body and face shapes
• Posing & composition tips
• Creating clean white backgrounds
• Numerous 'genre' styles including:
  • Lighting for portraits
  • Lighting for groups
  • Lighting for boudoir

Please bring your camera with you on the day.

This is a full day course running between 10.30am - 4.30pm .
